Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park
National Park Ancient European forest and bison reserve on Belarus-Poland border
Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park protects ancient lowland forest straddling Belarus and Poland, with populations of European bison; visitors come for guided wildlife watching, walking trails and conservation centers.
Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park is a protected area in the Brest region of Belarus that forms part of the ancient Belovezhskaya/ Białowieża primeval forest shared with Poland. It is a UNESCO-recognised natural reserve and one of Europe’s last large tracts of old-growth lowland forest.
The park preserves mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland and supports a range of large mammals, birds and plant communities. A principal conservation focus is the European bison (wisent), with dedicated breeding and viewing facilities that contribute to species recovery programs.
The forest has a long history of protection as a hunting forest and later as a state reserve; it has been managed for conservation and scientific study through the 20th and 21st centuries. International recognition reflects its ecological value and continuity of habitat.
The reserve lies along the Belarus-Poland border in the southwest of Belarus, with access points and visitor facilities on the Belarusian side in the Brest region.
