Bec Abbey

Bec Abbey (Abbaye du Bec) is a medieval Benedictine monastery in the commune of Le Bec-Hellouin in Normandy, founded in 1034 by Herluin. It became one of the principal centers of theological study in Norman and Anglo-Norman Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries.

Today the site presents surviving Romanesque and medieval architecture, including the abbey church and cloister, and is visited for its historic monastic layout and architectural details. Interpretive material and guided access focus on the abbey’s medieval role and its preserved structures.

The abbey’s prominence in the Middle Ages is linked to monks who served there and later held senior offices in the Church of England, reflecting close ecclesiastical connections across the English Channel. The monastic complex has been maintained and restored at various times to preserve the historic buildings.

The abbey lies in the Eure department of Normandy in northern France, in the small village of Le Bec-Hellouin, surrounded by agricultural land and village streets.
