The Batura Muztagh is a subrange of the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, occupying part of the western Karakoram chain. It contains multiple high, glaciated peaks and rugged terrain used by experienced mountaineers.

The area is characterised by steep summits, large glaciers and remote approach routes; access and travel in the range require logistical planning and mountaineering skills. The subrange forms part of the greater Karakoram mountain system.

Notable peaks in the subrange include Batura Sar, the highest summit of the group. The mountains and glaciers of the Batura Muztagh have been the focus of climbing and geographic exploration since the 20th century.

The range lies in northwestern Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, west of the Hunza valley within the Karakoram.

How to Get to Batura Muztagh #

Most approaches begin in Gilgit or the Hunza towns (Gojal). From Gilgit, take the Karakoram Highway (N-35) northwest to the Hunza towns-Gulmit and Passu are common staging points. From Gulmit, jeep tracks and trekking trails head up-valley toward the Batura Glacier; travel schedules depend on season and road conditions. The nearest major airport is Gilgit Airport (GIL); Skardu (KDU) is another gateway, but road travel is long and mountain roads can be closed by landslides.

Tips for Visiting Batura Muztagh #

  • Permit and high-altitude logistics matter: arrange permits, a local agent, and acclimatization in Skardu or Gilgit before approaching the Batura Muztagh.
  • Approach from the Hunza Valley: the Karakoram Highway to Gulmit, then jeep track toward Pasu and Batura Glacier-roads are rough and often impassable after rain.
  • Most parties fly into nearby Skardu or drive from Gilgit; expect multi-day trekking to reach good views and basecamps. Pack glacier travel gear and hire experienced local guides.
