Battle Abbey
Religious Site Ruined Norman abbey built on Hastings battle site
On the Hastings battlefield, Battle Abbey marks the 1066 clash with abbey ruins, grave markers and a visitor centre explaining the Norman conquest; site tours trace the battlefield and medieval remains.
Battle Abbey is the ruin and estate of a medieval monastery founded on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings in the town of Battle, East Sussex. The abbey precinct and adjacent battlefield are preserved as a historic site and visitor attraction.
The site combines visible abbey ruins, reconstructed sections and open ground interpreted as part of the battlefield; it includes a museum and visitor facilities that explain the events of 1066. The abbey precinct and surrounding landscape are used for guided and self-guided historical walks.
William the Conqueror founded the abbey in the years after 1066 on land associated with the battle; the monastic community remained until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, after which large parts of the complex fell into ruin or were repurposed.
Battle Abbey sits in the town of Battle in East Sussex, on the historic battlefield and within a short distance of the town centre and local transport links.
- Historical site: The site occupies the location where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066, and the abbey was founded on that battlefield.
What to See #
- Abbey ruins: The abbey church ruins and surviving stonework mark the core of the medieval monastery complex and are adjacent to open battlefield ground.
- Visitor centre and battlefield trails: A visitor centre and museum on site interpret the Battle of Hastings (1066) and the abbey's history, and the estate includes marked battlefield walks.
