Battery Rock is a prominent riverside bluff on the Illinois bank of the Ohio River in Pope County, near the town of Golconda. It is locally notable for its exposed rock face and its role in 19th century riverine activity.
A compact riverside overlook gives clear views across the Ohio River and the river valley; the rock face is visible from the river and from nearby roads. People visit for short walks, photography, and to view the river landscape.
The site was used during the American Civil War era as a named artillery battery and river observation point. It has since remained a local historic landmark and natural feature.
The bluff sits on the Illinois side of the Ohio River adjacent to Golconda in Pope County. The feature occupies a riverside position that makes it prominent from both the water and the nearby shoreline roads.
