Baths of Agrippa
Monument Ancient Roman public baths built under Marcus Agrippa.
An early Roman public bath complex in the Campus Martius built by Marcus Agrippa; surviving archaeological remains appear on walking tours of central Rome near the Pantheon.
The Baths of Agrippa were a public bathing complex constructed in ancient Rome by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in the late 1st century BC as part of urban improvements in the Campus Martius. They are regarded as among the earliest publicly funded bath complexes in the city.
Today only archaeological remnants and foundations remain near the Campus Martius area; the site is of interest primarily to those studying early Roman public architecture rather than large visible ruins. Nearby layers of later Roman and medieval development overlie the original bath complex.
Built by Agrippa as part of his building programme under Augustus, the baths provided social and bathing facilities to the city’s populace and represented a shift toward public amenities financed by leading Romans. Over subsequent centuries the complex fell into disuse, was altered by later construction and partly obscured by urban development.
The original complex was located in the Campus Martius area of Rome, in the vicinity of modern central Rome and other ancient monuments.
