Bath Abbey is an Anglican parish church in the centre of Bath, England, occupying a high-visibility location adjacent to the Roman Baths and the city’s Georgian streets. The present church is best known for its Perpendicular Gothic architecture and richly carved fan vaulting.
Interior highlights include the large ribbed fan vaults, Gothic west front and stained glass, along with memorials and an active choral tradition. Tower tours are available seasonally and provide elevated views across Bath’s sandstone roofscape for those able to climb.
The current Gothic building largely dates from a late 15th to early 17th century rebuilding, with a major Victorian restoration in the 1860s by George Gilbert Scott that repaired and completed parts of the fabric. The site has been a Christian worship location since medieval times.
The abbey sits in the heart of Bath, a short walk from the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent, within the compact World Heritage Site area of the city.
- Construction and restoration: Major surviving Perpendicular Gothic fabric dates from a rebuild beginning in 1499, with a Victorian restoration by George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century.
