Basse-Terre Island is the western half of the main Guadeloupe archipelago and is part of the French overseas region of Guadeloupe. The island is volcanic and mountainous, dominated by the active volcano La Soufrière.

Tourist activity concentrates on hiking in Guadeloupe National Park, visiting rainforest trails and waterfalls, and ascending La Soufrière, which rises to 1,467 metres. Coastal towns and beaches occur mostly on the island’s western and southern shores, while the interior remains largely forested.

Human settlement and colonial development began after European contact in the 17th century; the island’s economy historically combined agriculture, plantation crops and fishing. Conservation efforts in the 20th century created protected areas to preserve the island’s volcanic and forested landscapes.

Basse-Terre lies in the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean and forms the western part of the butterfly-shaped main island pair of Guadeloupe, separated from Grande-Terre by a narrow sea channel.

  • Volcanic interior: Dominated by a central volcanic massif and tropical rainforest, with trails and viewpoints concentrated around the volcano and park facilities.

What to See #

  • La Soufrière: An active stratovolcano reaching 1,467 metres above sea level and forming the highest point of the island and the archipelago.
  • Guadeloupe National Park: A large protected area covering much of the island's interior, designated as Guadeloupe National Park and known for rainforest, waterfalls and endemic species.

Tips for Visiting Basse-Terre Island #

  • If you plan to hike La Soufrière on Basse‑Terre, start at first light - summit routes heat up and afternoon tropical showers are common, so an early ascent reduces rain and visibility issues.
  • Check the Parc National de la Guadeloupe / local authorities for trail and volcano activity updates before you go - La Soufrière is active and access can be closed at short notice.
  • Base longer explorations from the town of Saint‑Claude (common trailhead for the volcano) or from Basse‑Terre town; that makes logistics for taxis/guides and park check‑ins much easier than trying to reach remote trailheads at the last minute.
