Bassae
Archaeological Site Ancient sanctuary with the Temple of Apollo Epicurius
Remote Peloponnese hilltop site housing the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, noted for its preserved frieze and Doric design attributed to Iktinos. Visitors come for archaeology and the mountain drive.
Bassae (the site of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios) is an ancient Greek sanctuary in the Peloponnese, Greece, famed for a mid‑5th century BCE temple attributed to the architect Iktinos. The temple is recognised for its innovative mix of architectural orders and for containing one of the earliest known Corinthian capitals.
The main attraction is the well‑preserved temple itself, which measures roughly 38 by 14 metres and retains much of its cella and inner arrangement. Important sculptural reliefs that once adorned the temple were removed after excavation in the 19th century and substantial parts are now held in major museums, while the on‑site remains allow study of the temple’s unique plan and detailing.
The sanctuary was built by the local community to honour Apollo Epikourios in the mid‑5th century BCE and has been known to scholars since the 18th and 19th centuries when systematic excavation and removal of sculptural material began. The site’s architecture has been the subject of scholarly study because of its unusual combination of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian elements and its adaptation to a mountainous setting.
The temple sits high on a wooded ridge in the western Peloponnese (present administrative region Western Greece), above the surrounding valleys near the modern village approaches. The site is reached by a narrow road and short walk from the nearby village and is remote compared with major urban centres.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional architecture and state of preservation within the landscape.
- Access and visiting: Site sits on a steep ridge and the access road is narrow; seasonal opening hours apply and the temple is best visited in dry weather for easier walking on the approach path.
