Baskunchak

Baskunchak refers to a large saline lake and its associated salt production area in southern Russia, located in the Caspian Lowland. The lake and surrounding salt pans are an important source of commercial salt.

The site combines natural saline lagoons and industrial saltworks where extraction and processing take place; the flat white salt expanses are visually distinctive and have local recreational and therapeutic uses. There are no large urban centres on the immediate shoreline.

Salt has been extracted from the site for centuries and it continues to be used for industrial-scale production under modern methods. The area is a flat, arid plain typical of the Caspian Lowland with saline soils and limited vegetation.

Geographically the lake lies in southern Russia within the Caspian Lowland region, some distance inland from the Caspian Sea in a sparsely populated steppe landscape.
