Basilica Porcia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman basilica in the Roman Forum
An early Roman basilica built for public business in 184 BC, the Basilica Porcia once stood by the Roman Forum and is now part of archaeological walks for visitors exploring ancient Rome.
The Basilica Porcia was the first public basilica in ancient Rome, founded in 184 BC by Cato the Elder and located in the Roman Forum. It established the basilica form later used across Roman civic architecture.
Archaeological traces indicate a rectangular hall used for legal and commercial functions with covered aisles and open internal space typical of Roman basilicas. No standing structure survives today; its footprint and elements are known from excavations and ancient literary sources.
Built in 184 BC by Marcus Porcius Cato, the basilica served as a public hall for legal proceedings and business in the Republican era. Over time it was damaged and replaced by later buildings in the Forum area as the urban fabric changed in the late Republic and Imperial periods.
The site lay within the Roman Forum in central Rome, near other Republican public buildings; the Forum sits in the valley between the Capitoline and Palatine hills.
