Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commonly called the Baltimore Basilica, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Baltimore, Maryland and a landmark of early American architecture. It was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe and built in the early 19th century.

The interior is noted for its neoclassical plan with a large central dome, a broad nave, and period detailing that illustrate early U.S. church design. Visitors come to view the Latrobe design, the dome and nave proportions, and the restored historic interior; guided tours are offered.

Construction took place in the early 1800s under Latrobe, and the building served as the cathedral seat of the first Catholic diocese established in the United States. The basilica has undergone restoration to preserve original finishes and architectural features.
