The Basilica of St. John is the archaeological remains of a large early Byzantine church near the modern town of Selçuk in İzmir Province, western Turkey. It was built close to the traditional tomb of John the Apostle and became a pilgrimage destination.
Today visitors see the ruined basilica plan, surviving masonry and the raised burial mound associated with the apostle’s tomb; the site interprets early Christian architecture and pilgrimage practice. The ruins are extensive and lie close to the ruins of nearby Ephesus.
Originally constructed in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, the basilica was designed to mark and venerate the apostolic burial site and served liturgical and commemorative functions. Over centuries it fell into ruin following changing religious and political conditions in the region.
The site is located just outside Selçuk in İzmir Province, a short distance east of the Aegean coast and adjacent to other major archaeological sites in the Ephesus area.

How to Get to Basilica of St. John #
Selçuk is reached by frequent trains and buses from İzmir (Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport) - the train to Selçuk takes about an hour from central İzmir. From Selçuk station it is a short taxi or dolmuş (minibus) ride to the basilica and the Ephesus archaeological area.
