Basilica of San Vitale

The Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna is a mid-6th-century Byzantine church constructed between about 526 and 547 CE and is celebrated for its exceptional mosaics and octagonal centrally planned architecture.

The interior contains expansive 6th-century mosaics, including the famous panels depicting Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora, set within an octagonal space that emphasizes central planning and richly decorated surfaces. Architectural details include marble revetment, intricately patterned mosaic work, and a clear separation of space between the central core and surrounding ambulatory.

San Vitale was built in the Ostrogothic and Byzantine period of Ravenna under imperial and local sponsorship, completed in the mid-6th century when Ravenna served as a western seat of Byzantine power. The building’s decoration dates to the same period and reflects imperial iconography and ecclesiastical programing.

The basilica stands in Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, close to several other late-antique monuments and within the city’s core of early Byzantine heritage sites.
