Basilica of Saint-Martin d'Ainay

The Basilica of Saint-Martin d’Ainay is a Romanesque church on Lyon’s Presqu’île that originated as the abbey church of the Benedictine Abbey of Ainay. Its principal structure dates to the 11th and 12th centuries and it is regarded as an important example of Romanesque architecture in Lyon.

Key interior features include the main nave, transept and richly carved capitals; a crypt beneath the chancel preserves earlier masonry and tombs associated with the abbey. The church retains the compact, robust forms and rounded arches typical of Romanesque design.

Originally part of a monastic complex, the building has survived urban changes and later modifications while conserving its medieval architectural character. It has functioned continuously as a place of worship and as a historic monument within Lyon’s urban fabric.

Situated in the Ainay quarter on the southern end of the Presqu’île, the basilica stands a short distance southwest of Place Bellecour and close to the Saône River.
