Main image

The Basilica Julia was a large public basilica in the Roman Forum in Rome, originally commissioned in the late Republican period and rebuilt in the early Imperial era; it served as a principal venue for civil law courts and public business. The basilica measured roughly 101 metres long by 49 metres wide and featured a multi-aisled interior framed by rows of columns.

Archaeological remains include foundations, column bases and parts of the internal layout now exposed in the Forum excavations; these fragments trace the plan of a three-aisled hall used for judicial proceedings and administrative functions. The basilica was begun under Julius Caesar in the 1st century BC and finished and modified under his successors, serving throughout the Imperial period before gradual ruin in the later Roman and medieval eras.

Construction was initiated during the late Republic by Julius Caesar and carried on by Augustus and later emperors, with repairs and reconstructions after fires and damage during the Imperial period. Over time the building lost its function and materials were quarried or recycled, leaving the archaeological remains visible today in the Roman Forum.

The site sits centrally in the Roman Forum in Rome, within walking distance of other major ancient monuments. It is part of the core archaeological area of central Rome and is accessed from the Forum pathways and public archaeological routes.

  • Visiting tip: The visible remains are archaeological ruins within the Roman Forum and are best appreciated with a site map or guide to orient the fragments to the original basilica plan.

What to See #

  • Central hall (nave): The building contained a large central hall with three aisles separated by two rows of columns; much of the substructure and floor plan are visible in the Roman Forum excavations today.
  • Porticoes and civic rooms: Surrounding porticoes and foundations reveal the footprint of service rooms and magistrates' offices where legal and civic business took place during the late Republic and Imperial periods.
