Basilica della Santa Casa is the principal pilgrimage church in Loreto, Marche, housing the small enclosed structure known as the Santa Casa that is venerated as the Virgin Mary’s home. The site has been an important Catholic shrine for several centuries.

The basilica encloses and displays the Santa Casa within a larger renaissance and baroque church building, with chapels, a nave and a museum of votive offerings and liturgical items. Pilgrims visit for devotional reasons and to view the Holy House and its decorations.

The tradition associating the house with Nazareth and its translation to Loreto has shaped the site’s devotional status and led to successive architectural additions around the enclosed house. The basilica contains works and inscriptions from multiple periods of construction and patronage.

The church complex is in the town of Loreto in the Marche region on Italy’s Adriatic side, near the city of Ancona.

The Basilica della Santa Casa is in the hill town of Loreto (Marche). Regional trains on the Ancona-Pescara line stop at Loreto station; by road Loreto lies along the SS16 coastal road south of Ancona (approximately a 30 km drive). From Loreto station the basilica is a short uphill walk of around 10-15 minutes or a short taxi ride.

• Visit early in the morning before large pilgrim groups arrive to see the Holy House with fewer people and to move more freely through the complex.
• Enter via the main square to access the basilica and then spend time in the adjoining museum (Museo Pontificio) where tapestries and votive offerings explain the shrine's significance-many visitors overlook the museum.
• If you want quieter contemplation, check mass and prayer schedules and plan your visit outside major feast days (for example, August 15) when the basilica draws much larger crowds.
