Basilica Cistern
Palace Underground Byzantine water reservoir supported by columns
A vaulted Byzantine cistern beneath Istanbul holds rows of columns and two Medusa heads; tourists visit for the cool, subterranean space and engineered water storage once supplying the imperial palace.
The Basilica Cistern is a large subterranean reservoir in Istanbul, originally built to store and supply water to the imperial palace and surrounding buildings. Its construction is dated to the 6th century CE during the Byzantine period.
The chamber measures roughly 140 by 70 metres and is supported by 336 marble columns arranged in 12 rows; column capitals vary in style. Two reused Roman-era Medusa heads serve as column bases and are a notable visual feature of the interior.
Built to secure Constantinople’s water supply, the cistern collected and stored water brought by aqueducts and pipelines for the nearby palaces and public baths. It survived through the Ottoman period and was brought back into public attention after being opened to visitors in the 20th century.
The cistern lies in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul, a short walk from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque on the historic peninsula, beneath the modern city streets.
- Medusa bases: Look for two upside-down Medusa heads reused as column bases at the southwest corner of the cistern; they are among the most photographed details.
- Structure: The cistern contains 336 marble columns, each about 9 metres high, forming a forest-like interior that is crossed by raised walkways for visitors.
How to Get to Basilica Cistern #
The Basilica Cistern sits in Sultanahmet (Old City) and is best reached on the T1 tram (Kabataş-Bağcılar) to the Sultanahmet stop; it’s a short 2-5 minute walk (about 100-200 m) from the tram stop across Sultanahmet Square. If driving, it’s in central Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district so expect city-center traffic and limited parking.
Alternatively walk from nearby landmarks (Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are adjacent). Many foot routes from Eminönü/Kabataş ferries or from the Şişhane/Taksim area via short tram or funicular connections make the cistern an easy central-city visit.
Tips for Visiting Basilica Cistern #
- Arrive right at opening (or late in the afternoon) to avoid the busiest guided-tour groups that concentrate around mid-day; early visits also make photography of the reflective pools easier before crowds arrive.
- Use the main entrance on Yerebatan Caddesi near Sultanahmet/Hagia Sophia - tickets and lines are handled there-so you start at the recommended visitor route and avoid wandering queues at side access points.
- Don't miss the two Medusa heads set into the northwest corner of the cistern's column bases; they are easy to pass without noticing because they sit low and partially recessed off the main walkways.
- Pay attention to the wooden walkways and the signage pointing to the raised platforms-walking the full route gives better views of the columns and lighting effects that many quick visits skip.
Best Time to Visit Basilica Cistern #
Visit the Basilica Cistern in the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) for a quiet, comfortable experience with shorter lines.
