Bartolomé Island
Island Small Galápagos island with iconic Pinnacle Rock and wildlife.
A small Galápagos islet famed for Pinnacle Rock, volcanic terrain and lava beaches. Day trips bring snorkelers, seabird watchers and short hikes around compact volcanic landscapes.
Bartolomé Island is a small volcanic islet in the Galápagos archipelago off the coast of Santiago Island, Ecuador, famous for its volcanic pinnacles and visitor-friendly day-trip infrastructure. The island is one of the archipelago’s most photographed and frequently visited sites.
The island’s signature feature is a sharp volcanic spire known as Pinnacle Rock; a short trail with steps and boardwalks leads to a summit viewpoint that gives panoramic views over lava fields and nearby islands. Clear, shallow waters around the island are prime snorkeling spots where visitors commonly see Galápagos penguins, green turtles and tropical fish.
Bartolomé formed from volcanic activity associated with the Galápagos hotspot; its present landforms are the result of lava flows and coastal erosion. Human use has been limited and the islet is managed under Galápagos National Park rules to protect endemic species and fragile habitats.
The island sits off the eastern tip of Santiago Island and is accessed by boat from populated Galápagos islands such as Santa Cruz on organized day tours.
- Visitor access: Day visits are only allowed as part of organized Galápagos National Park tours; landing is controlled to protect fragile vegetation and wildlife. Most trips depart from Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island.
- Best viewing time: The summit viewpoint is a short but steep hike with stairs and boardwalks; clear weather in the morning offers the best light for the classic panoramic photograph of the island and Pinnacle Rock.
What to See #
- Pinnacle Rock: A volcanic spire and eroded lava formation that rises from the shore and is the island's signature landmark; it is frequently photographed from the visitor trail and day-boat landings.
- Summit trail: A short, steep trail to a wooden viewpoint that provides panoramic views of surrounding islands and lava formations, commonly included on day-trip itineraries from Santa Cruz Island.
- Snorkel areas: Nearshore marine zones where Galápagos penguins, green sea turtles and reef fish are commonly seen while snorkeling directly from visitor boats.
How to Get to Bartolomé Island #
Bartolomé Island is in the Galápagos and is only reachable by boat. Visitors typically join day tours or multi‑day liveaboard cruises that depart from Santa Cruz Island (Puerto Ayora) or other Galápagos islands; tour operators arrange the boat transfers. The international gateway islands are Baltra (Seymour) and San Cristóbal - you fly there from mainland Ecuador and then transfer to the operator who provides the boat ride to Bartolomé.
Tips for Visiting Bartolomé Island #
- Visit early morning on a day trip from Santa Cruz to get the best light on Pinnacle Rock and smaller crowds before the mid-day flotillas arrive.
- Book a tour with a licensed Galápagos naturalist guide and operator-landings and snorkel sites on Bartolomé are regulated and guides know the permitted routes and wildlife hotspots.
- Don't skip the wooden-stair viewpoint above the landing: the short uphill trail gives the classic panoramic photo of Pinnacle Rock and the surrounding islets, so allow time for the climb and photos.
- Plan your snorkeling at Pinnacle Rock (off the landing beach) rather than waiting until later in the day-marine life such as Galápagos penguins and reef fish are often most active in the calmer morning waters.
