Barra Head

Barra Head is an island at the southern extremity of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, known for its steep sea cliffs and maritime position. The island is uninhabited apart from the automated lighthouse and associated service structures.

The most prominent feature is the island’s lighthouse, which was built in the 19th century and historically required keepers until automation; the surrounding cliffs support important seabird colonies and attract specialist naturalists. Access is by boat and landings are weather-dependent.

Historically the island was occupied at times but today has no permanent residents; its maritime role and wildlife interest are the main reasons visitors and researchers come. Landing is subject to tides and sea conditions and there are limited on-island facilities.

Barra Head lies off the southwestern coast of the Outer Hebrides archipelago, south of the islands of Barra and Vatersay and is reached by sea from the Western Isles.
