Surviving features include an imposing stone keep and stretches of curtain wall; visitors commonly explore the ramparts and terraces for views over the river and town. The compact ruin is readably laid out and easy to explore on foot.
The site was founded in the 12th century by the Balliol family and later came into the hands of the Bishops of Durham; it was expanded and refortified in the medieval period and declined into ruin in later centuries.
