Barguzinsky Nature Reserve
Reservation Siberian reserve protecting Barguzin sable and taiga forests
Barguzinsky Nature Reserve in Buryatia protects taiga forests and mountain slopes along the Barguzin Valley, historically established for sable conservation; visitors arrange guided hikes and wildlife observation near Lake Baikal.
Barguzinsky Nature Reserve is a Russian federal nature reserve in the Republic of Buryatia, created primarily for the protection of the Barguzin sable and for conservation of the Lake Baikal region’s ecosystems. It is one of Russia’s earlier reserves, established in the early 20th century.
The reserve encompasses boreal forest, mountainous terrain and alpine meadows with limited, regulated access for scientific research and a small number of organised ecotourism activities. Wildlife includes species typical of Siberian taiga and mountain zones, and visitors access the area via designated routes and programs.
Formally established in 1916 to conserve the unique sable population and the surrounding ecosystems, the reserve expanded its conservation remit over the 20th century to protect broader Baikal-region habitats. Management has focused on strict protection and research.
The reserve lies along the northeastern and eastern approaches to Lake Baikal in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, occupying mountainous and forested terrain east of the lake.
- Founding date: Established in 1916, the reserve was created to protect the Barguzin sable and is one of Russia's older nature reserves.
- Habitats: The protected area includes extensive taiga forests, mountain ridges and alpine meadows along the northeastern shore of Lake Baikal.
