Bardsey Island
Island Remote Welsh island with historic monastic site
Off Wales’ Llŷn Peninsula, Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) hosts seabird colonies, monastic ruins and a lighthouse; visitors take boats for guided walks and wildlife viewing.
Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) is a small island off the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula in northwest Wales, notable for its birdlife and early-medieval monastic heritage. It has a long-standing reputation in Welsh tradition as an important spiritual and natural site.
The island’s attractions include significant seabird colonies, coastal walks, wildflower meadows and the remains of a medieval priory. Wildlife sightings commonly include seabirds and grey seals; the island’s limited human population maintains small-scale accommodation for visitors.
Historically Bardsey was a major centre for pilgrimage during the early medieval period, and its priory and burial sites reflect that past. The island’s cultural identity remains strong in local tradition and history.
Bardsey lies off the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd; the nearest mainland departure points are the villages of Aberdaron and Pwllheli on the Welsh coast.
- Pilgrimage history: Known as the "Island of 20,000 Saints" in Welsh tradition, it has been an important early-medieval pilgrimage site and monastic centre.
- Access note: Access is by boat from the Llŷn Peninsula (Aberdaron or Pwllheli); services are seasonal and weather dependent, so crossings can be cancelled at short notice.
What to See #
- Priory and monastic remains: The priory ruins and small burial grounds document the island's long history as a medieval monastic site and pilgrimage destination.
- Seabird colonies and wildlife areas: The island supports large seabird colonies and coastal habitats that draw birdwatchers; common species include guillemots, razorbills and seasonal puffins in summer months.
- Settlement, lighthouse and visitor facilities: A lighthouse and a tiny resident community of a few households provide basic services; visitor accommodation is limited and landing is by small boat.
How to Get to Bardsey Island #
Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) is reached only by boat. Passenger trips are run seasonally from Porth Meudwy near Aberdaron on the Llŷn Peninsula, and there are occasional sailings from Pwllheli; landing and landing sites are tide‑dependent. Boats and landings are operated by local charities and independent skippers, so you must book in advance and check weather and tidal conditions before travel.
Tips for Visiting Bardsey Island #
- Book your boat crossing well in advance (most regular departures are from Aberdaron) and confirm departure times on the morning of your trip-crossings are cancelled in rough weather.
- Choose an early-morning crossing when conditions are usually calmer and wildlife activity around the island (seabirds, seals) is higher; late-afternoon return crossings are often windier.
- Ask the boat operator about landing arrangements and return slots before you go-landing can be tricky in a swell, and boat operators will tell you best landing places and recommended walking routes on the island.
Best Time to Visit Bardsey Island #
Best visited late spring through early autumn when boat services run and wildlife (especially seabirds) is most active.
