How to Get to Bardhaman
Bardhaman (Burdwan) is best reached by rail: Barddhaman Junction (BWN) is the city's rail hub with frequent connections to Kolkata (Howrah/Sealdah) and the industrial belt. The nearest major airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata; the smaller Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (Andal/RDP) is closer but has limited services.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU): Kolkata’s main airport is the most common air gateway for Bardhaman. The quickest door-to-door option is an app taxi or prepaid airport taxi to Bardhaman (roughly INR 1,500-2,500, 2-3 hours depending on traffic). A cheaper option is to take a taxi or airport shuttle into Howrah/Sealdah (taxi ~INR 300-800, 40-90 minutes depending on destination) and board a frequent train to Barddhaman Junction (see Train card for train fares and times).
Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (RDP): The smaller Andal/Durgapur airport serves the Durgapur-Asansol region and is closer to Bardhaman than Kolkata. Direct taxi transfers are the practical choice (roughly INR 1,200-2,000, about 1-1.5 hours). Public connections are limited, so expect to combine a taxi with a short bus or train leg if you want a cheaper route.
Train: Barddhaman Junction (BWN) is the city’s main station on the Howrah-Barddhaman and Howrah-Delhi corridors, with frequent suburban EMU/MEMU services from Howrah (HWH) and some services from Sealdah. Intercity and express trains connect Howrah/Sealdah to Barddhaman in roughly 1-1.5 hours for expresses and about 1.5-2 hours for suburban locals; suburban ticket fares are very low while reserved intercity fares typically range higher (see local station ticketing for current prices).
Bus: State-run and private buses run between Kolkata, Durgapur/Asansol and Bardhaman along the Grand Trunk Road/NH19 corridor. Bus journeys from Kolkata take around 2-3 hours depending on service and traffic; fares vary by vehicle and service (non-AC locals are cheapest, with AC/volvo/intercity services costing more). Local town and intercity buses also serve nearby villages and industrial towns; check schedules at the Bardhaman bus stand.
How to Get Around Bardhaman
Bardhaman is a rail-first city: trains are the most practical, reliable way to get to and from Kolkata and neighbouring industrial towns. Within town, a mix of autos, cycle-rickshaws and short taxi rides works best-use trains for intercity travel and taxis for door-to-door comfort.
- Local EMU/MEMU trains (INR 15-60) - Frequent suburban EMU/MEMU services connect Barddhaman with Howrah and the Kolkata suburbs and are the fastest, cheapest way to travel between Bardhaman and Kolkata for commuters. Trains are crowded at peak times but reliable; buy tickets at the suburban counter or use smartcard where available. Avoid heavy luggage on local trains - use reserved intercity trains for comfort.
- Intercity & Express trains (INR 60-300) - Express and intercity trains to Barddhaman (arriving at Barddhaman Junction, BWN) are faster and more comfortable for longer distances; they include reserved seating (2S/CC/SL) and occasional higher-class options. Book through IRCTC or at the station-reservations are recommended for weekend travel or longer routes. These trains are the best balance of speed and value when coming from Kolkata or further afield.
- State & Private buses (INR 50-300) - Buses run along NH19/Grand Trunk Road linking Bardhaman with Kolkata, Durgapur and neighbouring towns; state buses and private operators offer non-AC, AC and Volvo services. Buses are a good value option if you're flexible on time; expect slower journeys in peak traffic. For longer intercity trips book reputable operators or use the main bus terminals.
- Taxis & App taxis (INR 150-2,500) - App-based taxis and local cabs provide door-to-door convenience for getting around Bardhaman and for transfers to/from nearby airports and railway stations. Short in-town rides are inexpensive, but airport or Kolkata transfers can cost substantially more (see Getting There card). Negotiate or confirm fare for out-of-town trips and busy times.
- Cycle-rickshaws & Auto-rickshaws (INR 20-150) - Cycle-rickshaws are common for very short trips inside older parts of town; auto-rickshaws cover slightly longer local journeys. Prices are cheap-expect to haggle a little for cycle-rickshaw fares, while autos may or may not run on meters in some areas. These are ideal for navigating narrow streets and short hops where cars can't go.
- Walking - The central market areas, college campuses and some neighbourhoods are compact and walkable for short distances; walking is often the quickest way to thread between crowded streets. Pavements can be uneven and shade limited, so plan for heat in summer and wear comfortable shoes.
