Barcelona Royal Shipyard

The Barcelona Royal Shipyard (Drassanes Reials) is a medieval shipyard complex on Barcelona’s waterfront, principally dated to the 13th and 14th centuries and notable as one of the largest Gothic shipyard buildings in Europe.

Its long vaulted naves and pointed Gothic arches are the building’s chief architectural features; the site houses the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, which displays maritime collections and ship models inside the historic halls. The building’s interior space and exterior façades are key highlights for visitors.

Constructed and expanded in the medieval period to build and maintain royal and naval vessels, the shipyard later saw changes in use and restoration; in the 20th century the historic structure was adapted to accommodate the maritime museum and public displays.

The complex sits at Port Vell at the southern end of La Rambla, immediately adjacent to the Moll de la Fusta and the Columbus Monument, on Barcelona’s central waterfront.
