Barbegal aqueduct and mills
Archaeological Site Roman watermill complex and aqueduct ruins near Arles
A Roman-era aqueduct and mill complex near Arles that demonstrates ancient hydraulic engineering; visitors see partially preserved masonry and terraces while exploring the wider archaeological landscape.
The Barbegal aqueduct and mills is a Roman-era industrial milling complex in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, typically dated to the 2nd century AD. It is widely regarded as the largest known concentration of ancient water-driven mills.
The site preserves the stepped masonry of the mill terraces and the remains of the supply canal and aqueduct that fed them. The complex contained 16 overshot wheels set in two parallel series, and the layout and wheel chambers remain visible in the exposed rock and masonry.
Constructed by Roman engineers in the Roman imperial period to grind grain at industrial scale, the mills were fed by a dedicated aqueduct and canal. The complex functioned during the Roman period and was later abandoned; archaeological investigation in the modern era has exposed the masonry and clarified its layout.
The ruins sit near the village of Fontvieille in Bouches-du-Rhône, on a limestone slope in southern Provence, south of Arles. The site is reached by a short walk from nearby local roads and is displayed as an archaeological monument.
- Scale: 16 waterwheels arranged in two parallel rows of eight make this the largest known Roman watermill complex.
- Viewing: A short footpath and viewpoint above the site give the best overall view into the stepped mill chambers and the surviving aqueduct works.
What to See #
- Mill complex: The exposed millrace and stepped wheel chambers form two parallel terraces of eight mills each; visitors can clearly see the cuttings and masonry that housed the wheels.
- Aqueduct and supply canal: A channelled aqueduct and supply canal carried water from a higher source to feed the series of overshot wheels; much of the aqueduct route is visible in the surrounding landscape.
