Barabar Caves

The Barabar Caves are a group of ancient rock-cut caves in Bihar, India, carved into granite bedrock and dated to the Mauryan period in the 3rd century BCE. They are among the earliest surviving examples of Indian rock-cut architecture and are associated with ascetic communities.

Several caves in the complex show the highly polished interior finish characteristic of Mauryan workmanship and contain dedicatory inscriptions. The site includes caves such as Lomas Rishi and Sudama, notable for carved façades and preserved interiors.

Inscriptions and historical study link the caves to the patronage of Mauryan rulers and to religious communities of the period. Over subsequent centuries the caves saw limited reuse and later archaeological attention and conservation.

The caves are located in Jehanabad district of Bihar near the village of Barabar, set into a rocky hill landscape accessed by local roads.

What to See #

• Lomas Rishi cave: Lomas Rishi cave is famed for its carved and partly finished façade that imitates wooden architecture and remains one of the best-known Barabar caves. It displays the characteristic Mauryan polish on interior surfaces.
• Sudama cave: Sudama cave is part of the immediate cluster and, like other Barabar caves, has smooth, highly polished interior surfaces and inscriptions dating to the Mauryan period.
