Bara Imambara is a large 18th century Shia Islamic complex in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and famous for its vast vaulted main hall and attached labyrinth. The complex functions as an imambara (congregation hall) and a prominent historical monument in the city.

The ensemble includes a vast central vaulted chamber, the Bhulbhulaiya labyrinth of upper corridors, the Asfi mosque and a stepwell; visitors commonly tour the hall and maze and view the architectural masonry. The main hall is notable for its large unsupported span and distinctive arched construction techniques.

The complex was commissioned by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784 as part of an employment project during a famine and to serve as a religious and civic monument; it remains associated with Lucknow’s Nawabi heritage. Over time the site has been preserved as a major historical attraction in the city.

Bara Imambara stands in central Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and is a short distance from other heritage areas of the city such as Rumi Darwaza and the old city quarters.

Bara Imambara is in central Lucknow (old city). It is a short taxi/auto‑rickshaw ride from Charbagh/Charbagh Railway Station (about 3-4 km) or from Hazratganj; many city buses and local autos stop on routes serving the old city and the Imambara precinct. Once you reach the nearby road (Imambara Road/Husainabad area) the complex is a short walk from the main street.

• Head there early or late in the day to avoid the hottest hours and the biggest crowds; the carved cave facades photograph best in soft light.
• Don't miss the Bhulbhulaiya (the labyrinth) and the rooftop terrace - many visitors focus only on the ground-level halls and miss the maze and the views from above; factor in time to climb and explore both levels.
