Banpo (Banpo Yizhi) is a Neolithic village site near Xi’an in Shaanxi province associated with the Yangshao culture. Excavated in the early 1950s, it ranks among the best-known prehistoric sites in China for its preserved village layout and painted pottery.
Archaeological excavation in 1953 uncovered approximately 45 house foundations, a surrounding moat, workshop areas and a cemetery, all dated to roughly 4800 to 4300 BCE. The site is interpreted as a settled farming village notable for craft production and early village organisation.
The Banpo site lies on the plains near Xi’an in Shaanxi province and is presented to the public through a protected museum complex near the original excavation area.

How to Get to Banpo Yizhi #
Banpo is on the outskirts of Xi’an. From Xi’an North Railway Station or the city center, take a taxi (about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic) or local buses that serve the Banpo Museum area. Many organized tours from Xi’an include Banpo as a half-day stop.

- Look for the reconstructed circular houses and the painted pottery replicas in the museum - many visitors walk past these thinking they are modern art
- Go early in the day to avoid large tour groups from Xi'an that arrive by coach
- If possible, pair the site visit with the Xi'an Banpo Museum to see the burial and pottery displays indoors
