Bandipur

Bandipur is a hilltop settlement known for its preserved Newar architecture and compact, pedestrianised historic centre located in the mid-hill region of central Nepal. The town developed as a trading post on historic routes between the lowlands and the higher Himalayan valleys and today is a managed tourism destination.

The central quarter retains multi-storey merchant houses, carved wooden façades and a linear street pattern; several viewpoints on surrounding ridges provide sweeping vistas of the Himalayan ranges on clear days. The town functions as both a cultural museum-town and a base for short hikes to nearby caves and viewpoints.

Bandipur was settled and expanded by Newar traders from the Kathmandu Valley during the 18th and 19th centuries and later lost some transit importance when major highways bypassed the town; conservation and tourism initiatives since the late 20th century have emphasised architectural preservation and community-based hospitality.

Geographically the town occupies a ridge above river valleys in central Nepal and is reachable by road from the main east-west highway; it lies inland from major lowland settlements and serves as a popular stop for travellers between Pokhara and Kathmandu corridors.
