Band-e Kaisar is a historic dam-bridge in Khuzestan province, Iran, notable as an early example of Roman-style masonry used in Sassanian hydraulic engineering. It dates to the third century AD and is associated with the Shushtar irrigation complex.
Constructed in the Sassanian period, the structure is reported in historical sources and archaeological studies as having Roman engineering influence, often attributed to Roman prisoners or engineers working under Sassanian rulers in the third century AD. It was part of a planned irrigation network that supported agriculture in the region.
Band-e Kaisar is located on the Karun River in Khuzestan province near the city of Shushtar in southwestern Iran and is visited as a component of the nearby hydraulic monuments.

How to Get to Band-e Kaisar #
From Ahvaz: drive southeast about 95 km on Road 48 to the town of Shushtar, then follow local signs to the Shushtar historical complex and the Gargar Canal (the Band-e Kaisar is just north of the town center). By public transport, take a regional bus or minivan from Ahvaz bus station to Shushtar; taxis within Shushtar will reach the site in minutes.
Tips for Visiting Band-e Kaisar #
- Visit early morning to see fishermen on the Gargar canals and avoid the midday heat
- Combine with the nearby Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System sites - the complex is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Bring a local guide in Shushtar to explain how the Roman-built masonry was later integrated into Sasanian waterworks
Best Time to Visit Band-e Kaisar #
Best visited outside mid-summer when Khuzestan becomes brutally hot; early spring and autumn provide the most comfortable conditions and the clearest views of the waterworks.
