Band-e Amir National Park
National Park Afghanistan's national park with dramatic blue alpine lakes
Band‑e Amir comprises a chain of deep, mineral‑rich lakes in Bamyan carved by natural dams; visitors come for hiking, boating and the lakes’ layered blue waters.
Band-e Amir National Park is a protected series of deep, intensely blue lakes set in a highland canyon in Bamyan Province, central Afghanistan. The lakes are formed where mineral-rich water has deposited travertine to create natural dams and stepped basins.
The park is best known for its sequence of six main lakes separated by travertine barriers, scenic canyon walls and small waterfalls between basins. Popular activities include short hikes along the rim trails, viewpoints over the pools and photography of the vivid water colours.
The travertine dams are natural geological formations that developed over long periods as carbonate minerals precipitated from spring water. The area was designated as Afghanistan’s first national park in 2009 in recognition of its ecological and scenic value.
Band-e Amir lies north of the town of Bamiyan, within the central highlands of Afghanistan, and is accessed by road from Bamiyan and neighboring valleys.
- Protected status: Afghanistan's first national park, declared in 2009, and protected for its outstanding travertine-formed lakes and surrounding canyons.
