Bam and its Cultural Landscape centres on the Arg-e Bam citadel and the surrounding palm oasis in Kerman province, southeastern Iran, and is internationally recognised for its earthen urban architecture and historic irrigation landscape. The complex exemplifies traditional mud-brick construction and an integrated oasis settlement.

The site developed over many centuries as a fortified urban centre and caravan stop on regional trade routes, adapted around local qanat water-supply systems. Much of the visible citadel architecture represents phases of construction across pre-modern periods; the complex suffered severe damage in a major earthquake in 2003 and has undergone extensive conservation and rebuilding work since.

The ensemble is located at the modern town of Bam in Kerman province in southeastern Iran, set on a plain beside a palm oasis and agricultural lands that historically supported the citadel and town.

  • Construction material and scale: The citadel is widely recognised as the largest known mud-brick (adobe) structure complex of its type, representing traditional earthen construction techniques in Iran.
  • 2003 earthquake and restoration: The site was heavily damaged by a major earthquake in 2003 and has been the subject of large-scale conservation and reconstruction efforts since then.
