Ballon d’Alsace is a 1,247 metre peak on the southern fringe of the Vosges mountains in northeastern France, lying at the historic junction of Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté. It is a well-known regional high point and outdoor recreation area.

Marked trails lead to the summit providing panoramic viewpoints across the Rhine valley, the Black Forest and the Jura on clear days; the area also supports downhill and cross-country skiing in winter. How to Get to Ballon d'Alsace #

Ballon d’Alsace (Col du Ballon d’Alsace) is reached by car from nearby Belfort (around 25-35 km) or Mulhouse (about 45-55 km) via the regional departmental roads that climb into the Vosges massif (routes such as the D466/D27 in the Ballon d’Alsace area - follow local signs for the Col/Ballon d’Alsace). There is parking at the pass/visitor area; from there many marked hiking trails start and short walks lead to viewpoints.

  • Drive or cycle up the Col du Ballon d'Alsace and arrive early for the best chance of clear panoramic views toward the Vosges, Jura and Black Forest before valley mists form.
