Baiterek (monument)

Baiterek is a symbolic monument and observation tower in Astana (formerly Nur-Sultan), Kazakhstan, representing a stylised ‘tree of life’ topped by a golden sphere. The structure is a contemporary civic landmark associated with the capital’s modern development.

Visitors can ascend to the orb’s observation deck to view the city skyline and civic axis of the capital. The monument incorporates an elevator, internal exhibits about the city’s development and a commemorative display in the sphere area.

Erected as part of the city’s late 20th- and early 21st-century building programme, the monument was completed around the turn of the century and has become an emblem of the capital. It intentionally references national motifs and moments in modern Kazakh history.

Sited on the central boulevard of Astana, the monument anchors a major civic axis and is surrounded by government buildings, public spaces and new urban developments.
