Main image

Baikonur Cosmodrome is a space launch facility in Kazakhstan that was built by the Soviet Union in the 1950s and remains one of the world’s oldest operational launch complexes. It has been the departure point for landmark missions including Sputnik 1 and the first human spaceflight.

The site contains multiple launch pads, integration buildings and tracking infrastructure; the historic launch complex known as Gagarin’s Start is famous as the pad used for Yuri Gagarin’s 1961 flight. A museum and guided tours (by prior arrangement) present hardware and the history of Soviet and Russian space programs.

Constructed in the Kazakh steppe from the mid-1950s, Baikonur became the primary Soviet launch base and later remained critical to Russia’s human and satellite launch operations. The city and support facilities grew to serve the complex.

The cosmodrome lies in the Kyzylorda region of Kazakhstan and is administered under a lease agreement with Russia; access is controlled and visitors must obtain permissions to enter the secured area.

  • Historic firsts: Originally constructed in the 1950s by the Soviet Union, the complex was the launch site for Sputnik 1 in 1957 and Yuri Gagarin's flight in 1961.
  • Access and administration: The facility is on lease to Russia and access to the cosmodrome is restricted; civilian visits require authorization and are usually conducted as organised tours.

What to See #

  • Gagarin's Start (Launch Complex 1): Historic launch pad known as "Gagarin's Start" from which Yuri Gagarin made the first human spaceflight on 12 April 1961.
  • Cosmodrome Museum: A public display and museum in the cosmodrome area that presents rockets, space hardware and exhibits on Soviet and Russian space history.
  • Baikonur town (Leninsk): The town built to serve the cosmodrome, with administrative and logistical facilities for launch operations; access is highly controlled and visits are by arrangement.

Tips for Visiting Baikonur Cosmodrome #

  • Do not attempt independent visits - Baikonur Cosmodrome is on restricted territory and visits must be arranged through accredited tour operators who secure the required Russian permissions and local escorts. If your goal is to see a launch, book well in advance through an organized tour aligned with the launch schedule; arrival logistics (flights, train or convoy) and accommodation in Baikonur city require several days' lead time. Allow extra time for passport checks and the special-entry documentation the site requires; unscheduled access is not permitted and casual sightseeing is not possible. When tours are available, expect organized visits to include the city museum and briefings that most self-planners overlook.
