Baia (Baiae) is an ancient Roman seaside resort on the Gulf of Pozzuoli in Campania, Italy, known for its luxury villas, thermal baths and marine-front architecture dating mainly to the late Republic and Imperial periods. It is significant for the extent of surviving villa remains and for substantial portions of the town that have become submerged.
Extensive villa complexes with mosaic floors and bath buildings on land, and underwater ruins of harbour structures, statues and foundations that lie close to the modern shoreline; many features are best seen by guided boat or from coastal viewpoints. The site forms part of the Phlegraean Fields archaeological zone and is studied for both its classical architecture and interactions with volcanic activity. Interpretive displays and guided walks at the archaeological park explain the layout and point out important mosaics and bath complexes.
Baia developed as an elite Roman resort from the late Republic and flourished into the Imperial period when wealthy Romans built seaside villas and public baths. Over later centuries episodes of bradyseism and coastal subsidence caused parts of the town to sink below sea level and led to its decline; modern archaeological work combines excavation, conservation and underwater survey.
The ruins sit on the northern shore of the Gulf of Pozzuoli within the Phlegraean Fields, west of Naples and immediately adjacent to the town of Pozzuoli and its volcanic coastline. The area is coastal and geothermally active, with hot springs and fumaroles in the wider landscape.
- Submergence and viewing options: Several important Roman remains are now partially submerged because of local bradyseism and coastal subsidence, so glass-bottom boat tours and underwater archaeology are common ways to view parts of the site.
- Context in Campi Flegrei: The site is part of the wider Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) area, which combines volcanic landscape, hot springs and archaeological remains and is managed within regional heritage frameworks.
What to See #
- Archaeological Park of Baia: A network of Roman villas, thermal baths and harbour works forming part of the Phlegraean Fields archaeological area, with both terrestrial ruins and submerged remains off the modern shoreline.
- Baths and submerged ruins: Well-preserved remains of thermal complexes and villa mosaics on land, alongside submerged structures accessible by coastal boat tours and by underwater archaeology teams.
