Baekje Historic Areas
Historical Site Collection of Baekje-era sites reflecting ancient Korean kingdom.
Dispersed Baekje sites include royal tombs, temple remains and fortress earthworks across former Baekje territory. Tourists study Buddhist art, reconstructed halls and archaeological parks that trace early Korean state formation.
The Baekje Historic Areas are a serial collection of archaeological and architectural sites linked to the Baekje kingdom, which existed on the Korean peninsula from roughly the 1st century BCE until 660 CE. The property comprises multiple components that preserve palace ruins, fortifications and burial complexes associated with Baekje political and cultural life.
Across the sites visitors find fortress walls, palace foundations, temple ruins and royal tombs with burial goods that illustrate Baekje’s material culture and links with East Asian continental traditions. The ensemble covers urban planning elements, defensive works and funerary architecture spread over several kilometres between component towns.
Baekje developed as one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea and played a significant role in transmitting culture, technology and Buddhism between the Korean peninsula, China and Japan. The kingdom’s political centres shifted over time, and the preserved sites represent important phases of urban, religious and funerary development up to its fall in 660 CE.
The components are concentrated in the area of southwest-central Korea, with principal groups around the modern cities of Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan; the sites sit within a landscape of rivers, low mountains and cultivated plains in the historical Baekje heartland.
