Babi Yar

Babi Yar is a ravine and mass-execution site in Kyiv, Ukraine, and one of the largest sites of killings during the Nazi occupation. Its most documented atrocity occurred in late September 1941.

The site now functions primarily as a place of remembrance with monuments, plaques, and memorial events; people visit to pay respects and to learn about the events that occurred there. The most widely recorded massacre took place on 29-30 September 1941, when Nazi forces and their collaborators shot at least 33,771 Jewish men, women and children over two days.

The killings at Babi Yar continued after 1941 and included Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, Ukrainian civilians, and others; mass graves were created in the ravine and surrounding areas. During the Soviet period the site received limited public acknowledgement of the specifically Jewish victims, and memorialization expanded more visibly in later decades.

The ravine lies within the limits of the city of Kyiv and is accessible from the city; it is located among urban residential districts and transport routes rather than in a remote setting.
