Ba Đình Square
Plaza Central Hanoi square housing national government landmarks
Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square fronts the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and state buildings; tourists come to see the mausoleum, witness guard ceremonies and explore nearby sites like the Presidential Palace and One Pillar Pagoda.
Ba Dinh Square is the main ceremonial plaza in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh District and the symbolic centre of modern Vietnam. It is the site where Vietnam’s Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on 2 September 1945.
The square is framed by major state and historic sites including the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace, the One Pillar Pagoda and Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house, and it is used for national ceremonies and commemorations. The open space is large enough to host military parades and public gatherings and is a focal point for official events.
After 1945 the square became the focal point for new government institutions and the mausoleum and surrounding compounds were developed to commemorate Ho Chi Minh and serve state functions. Over time the area has been landscaped and maintained as a formal civic space.
Ba Dinh Square sits in central Hanoi within Ba Dinh District, adjacent to the Presidential Palace complex and a short distance from the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake.
