Main image

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Baku was a Russian Orthodox cathedral constructed in the late 19th century in what is now central Baku, Azerbaijan. It was one of several Orthodox churches built in the Caucasus during the Russian imperial period.

The cathedral served the local Orthodox community and featured the architectural characteristics of Russian church design of its era. It was an important religious building for the imperial-era Russian population in Baku while it stood.

The cathedral was built in the late 1800s during the Russian imperial presence in the region. It was demolished in the 1930s during Soviet secularization policies that removed several religious structures.

The site was in central Baku; the cathedral no longer exists and the immediate urban context has since been redeveloped. The former location lies within the modern city fabric of Baku.

  • Current status: The cathedral was a large Russian Orthodox church built in the late 19th century and no longer stands, having been demolished under Soviet rule.
