Azadliq Square, Baku

Azadliq Square is a major public square in central Baku, Azerbaijan, that functions as a civic and ceremonial space and is flanked by government buildings.

The square is notable for the large government building complex on its edge and for its role as a backdrop to public ceremonies, demonstrations and state events. Tourists pass through the square en route between Baku’s Old City and the waterfront and to see the scale of the central administrative architecture.

Known during the Soviet period by a different name, the square was renamed after Azerbaijan regained independence and has since been used for national ceremonies and large public gatherings. It sits within the modern administrative heart of Baku.
