Azadi Tower
Tower Iconic Tehran monument symbolizing modern Iran
Concrete-and-marble monument in Tehran’s Azadi Square, erected in 1971 for national celebrations; draws visitors for its geometry, museum spaces and city-centre location.
Azadi Tower is a monumental white marble monument in western Tehran, Iran, completed in 1971 and designed as a landmark for the capital. It is one of Tehran’s most recognisable modern monuments and a national symbol.
The tower is notable for its tall vaulted form clad in white stone that blends modern and traditional Iranian architectural motifs. An underground museum and exhibition space are located beneath the tower, and the structure is a frequent focal point in the large surrounding Azadi Square.
Commissioned and built under the Pahlavi era as part of ceremonial projects for the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian monarchy, the tower was designed by the architect Hossein Amanat and opened in 1971. After the 1979 revolution the monument was renamed and became associated with the concept of freedom.
It stands in Azadi Square in the west of Tehran, on a major traffic and public-assembly axis of the city, and is easily reached from central Tehran by road and public transport.
- Access and best time: The monument is set in a large public plaza and is directly accessible by public transport; visiting is easiest during daylight or early evening for views.
- Historic name and date: Originally named Shahyad Tower, it was completed in 1971 and renamed after the 1979 revolution; the site is both symbolic and frequently used for public gatherings.
