Azadi Stadium is Iran’s largest stadium and the focal point of the Azadi Sports Complex in the western part of Tehran; it served as the national stadium for major international fixtures and domestic cup finals.
The venue is used mainly for football and large-scale public events and sits within a multi-venue sports complex that contains training facilities and indoor arenas.
The stadium was constructed in the 1970s as part of a national sports programme and later renamed after the 1979 revolution. It has hosted international matches and large domestic derbies ever since, remaining the country’s principal large-capacity venue.
