Main image

Ayu-Dag is a prominent coastal massif on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula, often called “Bear Mountain”. It is a single rocky headland that rises sharply from the sea and is a distinctive feature of the region.

Hikers and beachgoers come for short coastal walks, viewpoints and coastal scenery rather than long alpine routes. The summit ridge and lower slopes offer panoramic views of the Black Sea and nearby coastal towns.

The massif has long appeared in local place names and legends and has been part of regional protected-area designations; it has also been used historically as a defensive and navigational landmark for coastal settlements. Over time the area around the mountain developed into tourist resorts and small towns that use the mountain as a visual focal point.

Ayu-Dag sits on the southeastern shore of Crimea near the coastal settlements of Gurzuf and within reach of Yalta, forming a cape that extends into the Black Sea.

  • Local name: The mountain is locally known as "Bear Mountain" and forms a distinctive rounded headland that projects into the Black Sea, making it a visible coastal landmark from nearby resorts.

How to Get to Ayu-Dag #

Ayu‑Dag (Bear Mountain) sits on Crimea’s southern coast near the resort village of Gurzuf and the town of Alushta, about 15 km east of Yalta by road. From Yalta you can drive or take local buses/marshrutka along the coastal road to Gurzuf and park near the base; from there short marked footpaths lead up the mountain. The feature is immediately adjacent to the coastal road and resort area, so access is by car, taxi or local minibus followed by a short walk.

Tips for Visiting Ayu-Dag #

  • Start your climb from the Gurzuf side-trailheads from the town give the most direct, commonly used route to the summit of Ayu‑Dag (Bear Mountain).
  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day and to get the best coastal light for photos; the trail is short but steep and can be crowded midday.
  • Stick to marked paths and viewpoints around Gurzuf; the area is a protected natural monument, and wandering off-trail can damage fragile vegetation and archaeology.
