Ayaz-Kala

Ayaz-Kala is a complex of ruined mud-brick fortresses on a desert plateau in Karakalpakstan, notable for its hilltop citadels overlooking the Kyzylkum desert. The ensemble comprises several separate forts that are prominent landscape features in the region.

The principal attractions are the three main fortresses occupying separate rises, with eroded ramparts, rooms and occasional vaulted chambers preserved in sun-baked clay. The site offers panoramic views across the surrounding arid plain and illustrates regional defensive architecture built of adobe and compacted earth.

The fortifications were constructed and reused over many centuries by successive local states in the Khorezm region; they belong to a tradition of fortified hilltop settlements that date back into the first millennium BCE and continued to be occupied into the early medieval period. Structural remains show multiple phases of rebuilding and repair.

Ayaz-Kala stands in western Karakalpakstan in northwestern Uzbekistan, on the edge of the Kyzylkum desert. The ruins are remote from major cities and are commonly visited from regional centres in Karakalpakstan after overland travel.

• Site condition and access: The forts are built in unbaked clay and have survived as low, weathered walls and towers; visiting requires travel over desert terrain and basic on-foot access between the mounds.
