Avebury
Archaeological Site Neolithic stone circle and ancient ritual landscape
Avebury’s Neolithic stone circles encircle a village in Wiltshire; visitors walk between standing stones, study burial mounds and explore the adjacent museum and pathways across the downland.
Avebury is a Neolithic henge and stone circle complex in Wiltshire, England, built in the later Neolithic and Bronze Age periods and forming one of the largest prehistoric ceremonial sites in Britain. The site is within a living village also called Avebury and is included in a wider World Heritage inscription.
The monument comprises a large circular bank and ditch (the henge) enclosing multiple stone circles and associated features that together cover several hundred metres across. Walkable grass paths allow visitors to pass among standing stones and around the central area.
Archaeological work has shown Avebury developed in the Neolithic as part of a broader ritual landscape that includes avenues, mounds and burial sites; parts of the monument were modified in later prehistoric and historic periods. Management in the modern era has combined conservation with public access.
Avebury sits in rural Wiltshire in southern England, within an agricultural landscape of rolling downland and close to other prehistoric sites that together form a well-known archaeological region.
- UNESCO listing: Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites', inscribed in 1986.
- Scale: Contains the largest single megalithic stone circle in Britain, with the henge measuring several hundred metres across.
What to See #
- Avebury henge and stone circles: A large prehistoric henge enclosing a circular earthwork and multiple stone circles, forming the core monument visible today.
- Associated avenues and mounds: West Kennet Avenue and nearby prehistoric mounds are connected features that form part of the broader ritual landscape associated with the site.
How to Get to Avebury #
Avebury is in rural Wiltshire; the nearest major railhead is Swindon (about 12-15 km / 20-30 minutes by car). From Swindon or nearby Marlborough you can drive to Avebury via the A4 and local minor roads (A4361 gives direct access into the village); there is a National Trust car park beside the henge and a short walk to the stone circles. Seasonal local buses serve Avebury from surrounding towns, but many visitors travel by car or taxi.
Tips for Visiting Avebury #
- Arrive at Avebury very early (before 09:00) or late afternoon to enjoy the stone circle with far fewer coach-tour groups; mid-morning to early afternoon is when most day-trippers arrive.
- Use the National Trust car park or the village parking rather than trying to park roadside near the circle - that puts you immediately within walking distance of the main stones and the Alexander Keiller Museum.
- Most visitors miss the nearby Neolithic sites: walk the short footpath to West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill to add quieter, equally significant monuments to your visit.
Best Time to Visit Avebury #
Best from late spring through early autumn (May-September) for milder weather and longer daylight while avoiding winter mud and minimal daylight.
