Avdat (also Ovdat) is an archaeological site in the Negev Desert of southern Israel that preserves the remains of a Nabataean caravan city later occupied in the Byzantine period. It formed one of the roadside stations on trade routes that crossed the Negev.

The site displays stone-built remains including fortress walls, large cisterns, terraces and street layouts, along with Byzantine churches and other late antique structures; the surviving masonry and public works illustrate its role as a stop and supply point. Interpretation focuses on trade, water management and occupation phases.

Avdat was established by the Nabataeans as a caravan station on incense and spice routes and later developed under Roman and Byzantine influence, when it gained new buildings and churches. It declined and was abandoned in the early medieval period as trade routes and political control changed.

The ruins lie on the Negev plateau in Israel’s Southern District, positioned on a basalt outcrop amid desert terrain; the site is accessible by road from regional towns and managed as an archaeological reserve.

  • UNESCO listing: Part of the Incense Route - Desert Cities in the Negev, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, illustrating its role in ancient trade networks.
