The island’s shoreline is steep and rocky with elevated interior topography typical of Aleutian islands, and it lies among other islands of the eastern Aleutian group. Avatanak is administered as part of the U.S. state of Alaska.
The island sits in the Aleutian archipelago off the western end of the Alaska Peninsula, within the maritime environment of the Bering Sea and North Pacific.
