High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Australia - Top End & Kimberley (Darwin, Kakadu, Broome, Kununurra)
Late in the wet season storms may still occur, but interludes of blue sky return more often; humidity stays high and temperatures are warm, around 28-33°C. Birding and crocodile-spotting can be excellent as the floodplains remain full, and the Kimberley’s waterfalls are at their most impressive; however, tidal mudflats and some cultural sites can be inaccessible. Travelers should monitor local ranger updates and expect muddy walking tracks.
Tropical Queensland & the Great Barrier Reef (Cairns, Port Douglas, Whitsundays, Torres Strait)
Late winter brings similarly stable conditions; water temperatures are pleasant for snorkeling and outer-reef visibility is often excellent, especially in northern reef sectors. It’s a good month for long walks in rainforest parks and for spotting migrating whales off the Whitsundays’ coasts on some years. Evenings can be cool near the ranges, so pack a light jumper for nights in Cairns and the tablelands.
Central Australia - Red Centre (Alice Springs, Uluru/Kata Tjuta, MacDonnell Ranges)
Late winter remains dry and cold overnight, but daytime warmth returns sufficiently for extended hikes and sightseeing in the MacDonnell Ranges. The clear air makes for long visibility and dramatic sunrise/sunset colors at Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and rental car travel is reliable on sealed roads. Bring a warm jacket for early starts and light layers for the sunny afternoons.
Eastern Seaboard - Sydney to Brisbane, including Blue Mountains and Byron Bay
Late spring can be showery and variable, but warmer days dominate and the water is pleasant for early-season surfers and swimmers along the Gold Coast and northern beaches. The Blue Mountains are vibrant with wildflowers and accessible trails, though sudden southerly changes can cool temperatures quickly. Book popular coastal accommodations early for long weekends and pack layers for shifting coastal breezes.
Southern & Tasmanian Region - Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Mountain
By this stage spring brings more settled weather and warming days ideal for walking and wine-country touring; Melbourne’s parks green up and Hobart’s café scene thrives with mild outings. Cradle Mountain becomes more accessible as snow recedes, though higher paths can remain boggy in thaw periods. Travelers should bring a mix of warm and breathable clothing as conditions can shift from cool mornings to pleasant afternoons.
Southwest Australia - Perth, Margaret River, Albany, Esperance, Rottnest Island
Spring explodes with wildflowers across the wheatbelt and inland reserves from September through November - this is the signature season for the region and draws photographers and botanists. Days are warm and pleasant, coastal breezes are comfortable, and vineyards and farms host harvest-style events. Expect some weekend crowds at top-viewing spots and book accommodation early if visiting during peak bloom.
